Teeth Whitening and Trays - What Is It?

Teeth whitening is a procedure that lightens teeth, removes stains, and provides a uniform color. Teeth whitening may be performed before dental prosthetics to ensure the color of natural teeth matches the prosthetics. Typically, whitening is done by a dentist or dental hygienist. In the clinic, teeth can be whitened with special materials or advanced Philips ZOOM technology, while at-home whitening can be done with trays. During an in-office whitening procedure, teeth are covered with a whitening agent activated by a specialized system. Whitening with trays at home is often recommended as a follow-up to maintain whiteness after a professional procedure.

Teeth Whitening Methods

Teeth Whitening with Philips ZOOM System

The advanced Philips ZOOM whitening system is one of the safest and most effective procedures, with its efficiency proven by scientific studies. This method provides teeth with a bright, even color while preserving the tooth’s structure. The procedure does not damage the enamel or cause demineralization (enamel breakdown). For this reason, teeth remain healthy and strong. Additionally, this procedure not only avoids harm but also promotes healing—the whitening gel contains calcium ions that strengthen teeth, fill microscopic surface defects, smooth the enamel, add shine, and reduce sensitivity.
Using this method, a whitening gel is applied to the teeth and activated by the ZOOM lamp. The entire procedure takes just over an hour. With Philips ZOOM, teeth can be whitened by up to eight shades.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In in-office whitening, the gums are covered with a special protective material, and a high-quality whitening gel is applied to the teeth. The gel reaches the deeper layers of the teeth and lightens them. At the end of the procedure, the teeth are coated with a desensitizing gel to prevent discomfort. Teeth may be slightly sensitive after the procedure, but this usually subsides in a few days. This method can whiten teeth by several shades, depending on the tooth’s structure and other factors. In-office whitening takes up to 1 hour, making it a quick procedure with immediate results.

Teeth Whitening with Trays at Home

This is a simple and effective method for whitening teeth at home. First, impressions of the patient’s upper and lower jaws are taken at the dentist’s office. Custom-made trays are then created and provided at the next visit along with whitening gel and detailed instructions for use.
For first-time whitening with trays, it’s recommended to wear them daily for about two weeks, 1.5–3 hours per day. The dentist will show the patient how to use the gel and recommend additional products if the teeth become sensitive.
At home, the clear trays are filled with whitening gel and placed over the teeth. The trays are transparent and almost unnoticeable, allowing the patient to smile and interact confidently. The whitening results are visible after just two weeks!

What Should You Know Before the Whitening Procedure?

Before the teeth whitening procedure, it’s essential to consult with a dentist. The dentist will check if some teeth need to be treated or if a professional cleaning is necessary before whitening. Additionally, the dentist will advise on the safest and most effective whitening procedure for the patient.
